Good Things Happen in Philly: Positive News Stories from 2024
Life and work can be a grind. I believe the antidote to this reality is making an effort to notice the good things happening around me. I look for good people, good things and good news.
It’s been three years since I started Unless. Over the same period, I have been posting weekly on LinkedIn. All of those posts can be found here. This is 52 good things (and many others not on my list) that happened in Philly in 2024. Look forward to collaborating and creating impact in the coming year.
Good News in Philadelphia – Sports
The 76ers provide funding for black owned businesses through Our Spirit of Small Business initiative. A player from the Philadelphia Wings donates bone marrow. Jalen Hurts of the Philadelphia Eagles donates AC units to schools. Jason Kelce grants a wish to a dying woman. Students received 10,000 pieces of sports equipment.
Good News in Philadelphia – Citizens
The Guinan family donated bikes to children. Marian Anderson’s name will appear on Kimmel Center Verizon Hall. Domenic Colasante of 2X Marketing donated tuition money to BLOCS. Philly native, Jake Tapper, donates to support CJ Rice, a man who was wrongfully convicted. 500 people joined ACHIEVEability to clean up the streets. A food truck is launched to help veterans. A community garden is added to the Philly landscape. A woman who lost her house in a fire donates food to others. Teenager fixes bikes for other kids. A Philly couple donates lemonade and books to kids. Community rallies to support first responder in wake of tragedy. West Philly native creates hypoallergenic hair brand that’s gone international. A group climbs the Rocky steps to raise money for charity. Two women of color are teaching kids to get outside into nature. Dad rides across the country on a bike to raise money for charity. Volunteers clean up 100 parks.
Good News in Philadelphia – Organizations
An old charity gets a new home – a big grandiose basketball arena for Philadelphia students thanks to Alan Horwitz. The Wardrobe provided clothing to people in need – every month! The Boyertown Junior Women’s Club gathered prom dresses for students. YO-ACAP and Barbers Against Violence provide free cuts and mentorship. Philadelphia Music Alliance donates money to Temple University, University of the Arts, and Drexel University. The Boy Scouts donate plants to Kensington garden. Denis’ Pantry feeds students in Delco. Rebuilding Together Philadelphia builds 40 homes to in Strawberry Mansion. Create Access teaches students how to build in 3D. Philly’s Biggest Baby Shower took place for the second year in a row. Montgomery County hosted a school supply drive for students. 100 Black Men gave away book bags. MacKenzie Scott donates to Resilient Coders. The Formerly Incarcerated Renaissance Museum opens. Philadelphia Youth Sports Collaborative sets out to raise $5M. Nonprofit helps grandparents raise grandkids. Veterans heal together through beautification projects.
Good News in Philadelphia – Companies
Paint Philadelphia provided a free home painting job to a family in need. Temple University provides free tuition for students. Bradford White donates heaters to Philadelphia families. YEAH Philly and American Power Electrical supply install lights throughout the city. Giant Foods donates to Philadelphia School District. Unless Kids sells used toys at a discounted rate and encourages upcycling. First Responders head to NC for hurricane recovery. Every Cure receives $60M to repurpose medication. Steven Singer donates money to women’s center. Bernie Robbins turns the company over to its employees.
My hope for all of us in the coming year is to see more good than bad in our homes, workplace and community. Because in years past and years ahead, we know good things happen in Philly. Wishing you a year of empathy, contentment and peace.
